Michigan joined the ranks of other states which have legalized online sports betting when Governor Gretchen Whitmer approved a bill in December of 2019. Lawmakers in Michigan had been trying since 2015 to legalize sports betting for retail shops and online sportsbooks. The very first legal sports bets in Michigan were made in March 2020.

Any adult that is over the age of 21 is allowed to make bets on sporting events. The bets can be made at online sportsbooks, and they can also be made at betting facilities which are operated by the land-based casinos in the state. Bettors using an online sportsbook must be located within the state while making or collecting a wager. Daily fantasy sports competitions are also permitted.

It is expected that the first online betting venues in Michigan will begin operations sometime in 2021. As of May 2020, three land-based casinos in Michigan were accepting sports bets. These are Greektown Casino, MGM Grand Detroit, and MotorCity Casino. Some in the state are optimistic that online sportsbooks might be able to accept wagers by the end of 2020.

Bets that can be made at Michigan sports betting parlors include wagers on collegiate and professional athletic events such as boxing, baseball, and basketball. Michigan has a strong local sports market that is represented by the Detroit Lions, Detroit Tigers, and Detroit Pistons. Local schools include the University of Michigan which has produced many impressive sports squads.
